Gould Construction is thrilled to announce the discovery
of near perfectly preserved mammoth, mastodon, and
acient bison bones, found during the excavation of the
Ziegler Reservoir just outside of the town boundaries
of Snowmass Village.
The discovery was made when Jesse Steele, a heavy equipment
operator from Grand Junction with Gould Construction, noticed what
looked like a rib bone as he was bulldozing dirt into a pile to be loaded
onto a dump truck.
After noticing a rib bone come up over the blade of his Dozer,
Steele and other construction workers at first thought maybe
the bones of a cow or a buffalo had been turned up.
But after taking a closer look in the dirt piles left on either side
of the Dozer, the workers found some huge fossils, including
the mammoth’s jaw bones. That’s when the workers knew they
had found something unusual and stopped working in the area.
The jobsite is frozen over for the winter, but excavation
will resume this spring.
